About the Segal AmeriCorps Education Award

After successfully completing an AmeriCorps term of service and enrolling in the National Service Trust, an AmeriCorps member is eligible to receive the Segal AmeriCorps Education Award, which can be used to repay qualified student loans and pay current educational expenses.

Seven Important Things to Know
about the Education Award

  1. The award amount varies based on the term of service completed. Full-time members receive a $6,895 award for 1700 service hours, part-time members receive a $3,477.50 award for 900 service hours, summer members receive a $1,565.08 for 300 service hours.

  2. The Award can be used to repay qualified student loans and to pay current educational expenses at eligible institutions of higher education and training programs.

  3. The Award may be used for up to seven years after the service completion date. For example, an Education Award received after completing service in 2021, expires in 2028.

  4. The Award may be transferred under specific conditions. To transfer your award, a member must be at least 55 years old at the start of service and the award must go to their child, stepchild, grandchild, step-grandchild, or foster child.

  5. The Award is subject to federal tax in the year each payment is made.  It is considered taxable income regardless of whether it is used to pay current educational costs or to repay qualified student loans.

  6. The Award aggregate (or total) value of two (2.0) full-time education awards is the most an AmeriCorps member can earn.

  7. The Award can be accessed through a member’s MyAmeriCorps portal.
