I am a self taught artist

Hello! My name is John Gregory Evans. I have a diagnosis of paranoia schizophrenia, depression, and social anxiety. I am an artist. I first realized I was an artist when I was asked to display my work at the Abilities Expo in San Antonio - January 2007. I studied a little drafting and design when I was 19. It was always stayed with me except through the very dark days of my illness.

I enjoy working in pencil or pen & ink and discovering the positive and negative values through lines, shapes, pointillism, elliptical configurations. I try to created a historical significance while trying to maintain high realism without losing my image.

I enjoy linear and perspective artwork in the Baroque style of the Romantic period into the 19th century. I like to study and draw ancient cathedrals, temples, shrines, palaces, streets, porticos, gardens, ships of old, lighthouses and nature. I also attempt to add calligraphy of which I am still trying to master.

I love to keep with the five linear rules to achieve an illusion of space where idealized objects may be placed. I look for the base line, the perpendicular lines that frame the image, horizon line, foreshortening lines or parallel lines and diagonal lines that all come from the vanishing points and alternate VP's. It absolutely amazes me how all the points and lines come together in a linear sequence and expression of shape. I see nothing more beautiful.

The first time I was introduced to art was when I was 17. I met a man who drew a beautiful perspective drawing of a harbor with a nice sailboat in pointillism. It was truly beautiful. To take from the imagination and create, for "the reward for creativity is to be close to God."

I began my passion for sailboats and ships when I was 14. Read an article in National Geographic about a 16 year old young man who sailed around the world in a 24 foot sloop. I have always imagined the beautiful scenery, architecture, people, and landscapes he must have seen. Since I can't travel in that way, I love to draw these beautiful pieces of art and share with people. I would also someday enjoy teaching once I have it all down.

I started giving these pieces of art and poetry to my family and friends as gifts but finally realized (through the help of others), that I would potentially make a good living for myself as an artist, the greatest passion I have ever had.

I also enjoy woodcarving (chip carving, line carving, relief carving and would like to sculpt in wood).

Thank you for visiting Imagine Art's website and allowing me to share my love of art. Peace and Blessings!
